When the Love of Your Life is a Pet
Life is fulfilled through relationships and it’s not all within the human family that makes up a real family unit! Pets are often called fur babies and they become just as meaningful and important as other intimate, close, real relationships. Pet’s are named by their people, learn to respond to their language and traits, personalities come forth and well love happens!
Pets can fill a space that is needed inside of the human heart. They love so unconditionally and they tend to grow into relationship patterns just like their human counterparts. I remember the love of my life as a little girl was my small, white dog named Oliver. He was smart, sweet, and he was my loyal friend. I still remember the day he was taken from me in an accident and the grief that followed.
Pets unlike people are hand picked unless one shows up at your door and you adopt it! Most commonly however is the falling in love with a pet and deciding to take it home. People need to agree and want to be taken home. A pet is a vulnerable animal that is taking it all in on good faith.
Let me tell you about Roxie. She was hours away from death and was saved only in the nick of time and she repaid Lonnie with years of faithful, tail thumping, snuggles, taking walks, giving love and understanding and never even needing to speak a word.
She brought such joy and her personality was remarkable. She reflected her owner and their light bonded. Maybe she was a Jedi and Lonnie the padawan but together they were quite a force of love. Roxie needed him and he needed her.
Tulip is another angel on earth now who brought my dear friend such companionship and love that they had a clairvoyant connection. Who trained who in that love of a lifetime? Sallieanne was more than willing to bow to the wishes of this little dog who couldn’t wait for her to get home and once she person walked in it was like Christmas every night. Tulip was shy and loved her comfy spots which meant she was next to her true love. Saying goodbye to her was heartbreaking as pets are people too!
I remember little Bella who stayed faithfully in her owner's lap and shivered if strangers came in. What is in the soul of an animal? Lane watched over her like a good papa and she in turn made his heart sing and gave him joy. Pets are pure, beautiful, love energy. They sense things and they trust their instincts. Animals are a mighty force on the earth and the bonds we form with them are bonds that last beyond this plane.
There are so many different kinds of pets and each one brings a different emotional experience. Equestrian trainers know the emotional side that horses bring out in people. Animals give us a responsibility outside of ourselves and the service is unselfish and allows us to find the part of us inside that is also pure and giving.
When a pet dies or is put down in mercy it is a significant grieving experience for many people. Allow yourself time to grieve and to adjust to the change in the family. The loss of an animal can feel the same to many as the death of a person. Give yourself time to heal. Create a way to remember your pet and to honor their memory.
Talk to people who can listen without judgment and accept your feelings and help you to process the loss. Don’t feel rushed to ‘get over it’. Time will ease the pain and it will take care of itself. It is normal to feel lost, shut down, and withdrawn.
There is no wrong way to handle it and many find that getting another animal does help ease the pain of the loss as they keep busy taking care of a new animal and giving that service to a new part of the clan.
Picking a new pet is also a decision that with some thought will help you to know the right time, right bred, right for you moment. Be responsible with your pets and if you spayed or neutered you will not need to worry about finding homes for more animals. Keep it simple and focus on your pet unless you are a professional breeder of course!
Pets are an expense of course and this also needs to be considered as your re-establish with a new one. Make sure it is right for your lifestyle, budget, and that your heart is ready. The shelters are full of pets that people thought they wanted and found out it was just too much! Do your homework and study it out before you take the action step. Pets depend on us and need us too.
It’s a wonderful thing to fall in love with a pet and have a fulfilling relationship and care for and love a creature that is always ready to play, happy to see you, and depends on you for it’s needs too. Relationships are about relating! If you are thinking of falling in love with a pet you might check out a shelter and find that one person’s mistake is your once in a lifetime love!
Blessings,
